19 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of landlords registered with local authorities in 1996 and in 1997; if he has satisfied himself with the level of compliance by landlords with the relevant legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The number of registrations under the Housing (Registration of Rented Houses) Regulations, 1996 were: 31 December 1997: 14,971 landlords, 25,779 houses; 31 December 1996: 10,702 landlords, 19,384 houses.
Local authorities, who are responsible for enforcement of the regulations, have been urged to take all steps open to them to secure compliance by landlords with the regulations.
