Jim Mitchell

Question:

107 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if the Office of Public Works has responsibility for maintaining the canal bank at Goldenbridge Walk, Inchicore, Dublin 8, including traffic barriers and signs; if so, if she will have arrangements made for major upgrading treatments to be undertaken to the traffic barriers, signs and bollards at the junction of St. Vincent Street and Goldenbridge Walk, Dublin 8; if the new barrier to prevent vehicles going into the canal will be constructed to a design that would not permit sitting or loitering; if bollards to prevent vehicular traffic travelling down the canal will be replaced with barriers of a kind that also do not permit sitting and loitering; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6705/98]

Responsibility for the Grand Canal, including the Barrow navigation and the Royal Canal was transferred to my Department from the Office of Public Works in March 1996.

I am advised that the traffic barriers and bollards at the junction of St. Vincent Street and Goldenbridge Walk, Dublin 8, were erected many years ago by Dublin Corporation, and I am arranging that the matters referred to by the Deputy will be raised in the context of the joint project team set up between my Department and the Corporation.
