Vol. 488 No. 5

Written Answers - Hospital Accommodation.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

79 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the shortage of beds in the University Hospital Cork; the action, if any, he intends to take to deal with the situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6574/98]

There are 552 beds in Cork University Hospital serving a range of specialities including regional specialities. The management of the bed complement is a matter for the Southern Health Board. I have been advised by the board that from time to time difficulties arise in relation to persons requiring routine admission to the hospital. However, emergency cases are always accommodated. I have been further advised by the board that it is currently examining its policy in relation to bed management to ensure that the hospital's bed complement is being utilised in the most effective manner.
