Vol. 488 No. 6

Written Answers. - Racist Incidents.

Michael Ferris

Question:

17 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps, if any, he has taken to counter racist graffiti and other incidents of a xenophobic nature that have recently occurred; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6759/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that any such incident which is reported or known to them is fully investigated. The Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act, 1989, provides for a number of offences to deal with incidents of this type. I utterly condemn any such incidents which, thankfully, are isolated in nature and wholly unrepresentative of the views of the vast majority of Irish people.
