47 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of persons that have appealed to him for leave to remain in Ireland on humanitarian grounds. [6754/98]
It is possible for persons who have been refused recognition as refugees to make a case to me for temporary leave to remain in the State. Since taking up office as Minister I have received 45 such cases for consideration and 18 people have been granted temporary leave to remain. A total of nine have had their applications turned down and a further 18 are under consideration.
