Vol. 488 No. 6

Written Answers. - Victims of Crime.

Question:

113 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will allow crime victims independent legal representation in court cases; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6764/98]

The question of separate legal representation in the course of trials is usually raised in the context of complainants in rape cases. This issue is discussed in the Discussion Paper on the Law on Sexual Offences which I intend to publish within the next few weeks.

I am concerned to ensure that crime victims receive the support they need in court cases and this general issue will be addressed in the context of the new Charter of Victims of Crime which is currently being prepared in my Department.
