Michael Ring

Michael Ring

Question:

194 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance the proposals, if any, he has to extend the coastal resort tax status to the Barony of Erris, County Mayo, in view of the fact that other areas in Mayo have benefited greatly from this status which in turn make these places more attractive to investors to the detriment of the Belmullet region. [6982/98]

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 193 and 194 together.

The designated seaside resorts scheme was introduced on 1 July 1995 for three years on a pilot basis. Officials from my Department, the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation and the Revenue Commissioners are currently reviewing this pilot scheme. Any decision regarding the designation of new areas will have to take into consideration the findings of this review. It is not expected that this review will be completed until the early summer.
