Question:

231 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Health and Children if his Department recognises the post of orthodontist; if so, the number of these positions in existence within the health boards; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7105/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 226 and 231 together.

I refer the Deputy to my reply on 24 February 1998 to Parliamentary Question No. 190 in which I set out the information advised to me by the health boards as to the number of orthodontists and other dentists providing orthodontic services for the health boards. Health board dentists providing orthodontic services under the overall direction and supervision of the consultant orthodontist are normally appointed as acting senior clinical dental surgeons while in training.
