Statutory responsibility for regulating the number and type of appointments of consultant medical staff rests with Comhairle na nOspidéal under the provisions of section 41(1) of the Health Act, 1970.
A number of agencies have identified a requirement for an additional consultant neurosurgeon and they fall to considered by my Department within the context of the many competing demands for resources within the acute health sector.
