Vol. 488 No. 7

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Tony Gregory

Question:

309 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs further to Parliamentary Question No. 135 on 27 November 1997, if the persons (details supplied) lose out financially from April 1998. [7055/98]

The Deputy's previous Question No. 135 on 27 November 1997 concerned the position of a couple, unmarried and with three dependent children, who were in receipt of unemployment assistance. There have been no changes in the interim to the social welfare system which would have the effect of making the couple financially worse off from April 1998.

I take it the Deputy is questioning the effects of the tax treatment of income earned if one of the couple concerned were to take up employment, as compared to the treatment of a married couple in similar circumstances. Issues relating to the treatment of married and unmarried couples under the taxation system are the responsibility of the Department of Finance.
