Vol. 488 No. 7

Written Answers. - Special Areas of Conservation.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

329 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the action, if any, her Department is taking to protect the natural heritage area (details supplied) and potential special area of conservation currently being endangered by unlicensed contaminated flood water discharges and wetland exploitation within or in the vicinity of a County Sligo quarry. [7083/98]

The area referred to by the Deputy has been proposed for designation as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the EU Habitats Directive. All new development proposals at the site in question are monitored by Dúchas, the Heritage Service of my Department, as is the case with other proposed SACs. Dúchas is not aware that there are unlicensed contaminated flood water discharges in the vicinity of this County Sligo quarry, but I will arrange for an inspection to be carried out. It should be noted also that Dúchas is not the licensing authority in matters relating to water pollution prevention or control.
