Vol. 488 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cattle Exports.

Tony Gregory

Question:

125 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the number of calves under six weeks old exported to the continent for each of the years from 1996 to date; the numbers to each of the countries concerned; and the shipping companies now involved in this trade. [6955/98]

Statistics on the export of calves by reference to age are not readily available. However the Central Statistics Office gathers certain data on exports of live domestic bovines weighing less than 80 kilogrammes, excluding pure-bred breeding animals. This data is collected from traders with exports in excess of £500,000 in value in any one year. The most recent statistics available are as follows:

Country of destination

1996

1997 (to November)

France

3,697

Belgium/Luxembourg.

1,789

Netherlands

13,720

1,541

Italy

2.981

369

Spain

1,541

144

The bulk of the live exports to the continent are transported onThe Purbeck which is operated by Gaelic Ferries.
