Vol. 489 No. 4

Written Answers. - Amsterdam Treaty.

Michael Finucane

Question:

38 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, the Government have for the Amsterdam Treaty referendum campaign. [8241/98]

I hope that it is clear to all Members from recent debates in this House in connection with the Eighteenth Amendment of the Constitution Bill, 1998, that the Government intends to campaign vigorously in favour of the ratification of the Treaty of Amsterdam. The Government's campaign in support of a "Yes" vote will, of course, be conducted with full regard to the relevant Supreme Court judgments. The Treaty contains provisions on a wide range of matters which will be of benefit to the citizen. Members of the Government will be active in bringing these provisions to public attention and in advocating support for the Treaty.
