Jim Higgins

60 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Government has been consulted regarding the appointment of a successor to the United States of America Ambassador, Mrs. Jean Kennedy-Smith; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8236/98]

The nomination of an Ambassador is a matter for the sending state. When it has concluded its domestic procedures, the sending state seeks theagrément or agreement of the receiving state to the nomination. The request for agreement is submitted to the Government by the Minister for Foreign Affairs who informs the sending state of the Government's decision. No request for an agrément has been received from the US authorities for a successor to Ambassador Kennedy-Smith.
