Vol. 489 No. 4

Written Answers. - Detention of Prisoners.

Tony Gregory

Question:

81 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the action, if any, he has taken on behalf of a person (details supplied); if the allegations of ill-treatment have been investigated; and the response, if any, of the British authorities to representations he has made. [8306/98]

I am aware of the case of the person named and have instructed officials of my Department to closely monitor the conditions in which he is detained.

As I advised the Deputy in my reply to his question of 28 January, an official of the embassy in London made a consular visit to the person named on 9 January. A further visit took place on 16 March.

The concerns highlighted during these visits have been raised in detail with the British authorities and are being pursued. The embassy will stay closely and actively in contact with all aspects of this case.
