Vol. 489 No. 4

Written Answers. - Physiotherapy Service.

Michael Ring

Question:

112 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to sanction funding to the Western Health Board for the provision of a second community based physiotherapist in County Mayo in view of the fact that 14 per cent of the health board's population are aged 65 and over compared to the national average of 11 per cent [8326/98]

In 1998, £3 million has been provided for the development of physical and sensory disability services nationally, of which £285,000 has been allocated to the Western Health Board. Priorities for the allocation of this funding are a matter for each health board in consultation with its co-ordinating committee for physical and sensory disability services. In this context, I understand that a proposal to appoint an additional physiotherapist for the Mayo community care area, to provide services for older people and physically disabled adults, is being considered by the Western Health Board.
