Vol. 489 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

142 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for the delay in approving funding for a school (details supplied) in County Meath in view of the fact that plans for the development of toilet facilities and the general upgrading of the playground and so on have already been approved; his views on whether the feasibility study being undertaken contributes to this delay; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that this school was built in the 1800s and no money has been spent on it for a considerable number of years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8435/98]

The school applied to my Department in December, 1997 for upgrading of toilet facilities and the provision of a library/medical room. This application is currently being examined within my Department's planning and building unit in terms of enrolment projections and architectural feasibility. When this examination has been completed, my Department will be in touch with the school management.

Prior to December 1997, no application for grant-aid for building related works had been received from the school for a period of 15 years. Since the devolved grant came into operation in 1997, it is open to schools to spend the grant money on minor improvement works to the buildings.
