Vol. 489 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

John McGuinness

Question:

146 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if a remedial teacher will be appointed for a cluster of schools situated at Glynn, Drummond, Ballymurphy and Ballyglisheen, County Carlow, in view of the fact that each of these schools has applied for a remedial teacher without success and a fourth teacher was taken from Glynn national school in September 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8504/98]

John McGuinness

Question:

148 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a remedial teacher to a cluster of rural national schools situated at Kilmanagh, Burnchurch, Church Hill and Danesfort, County Kilkenny, in view of the increasing need for this service by each school and in view of the fact that the original application dates back many years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8506/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 146 and 148 together.

My capacity to allocate additional remedial teacher posts in any given year is dependent on resource availability and the level of competing demand from other special needs areas. I have to determine priorities and allocate available resources to best effect.

I am currently reviewing provision across the special needs area, including the remedial area, to ensure that all available resources are deployed as effectively as possible.

I can assure the Deputy that the needs of the schools to which he refers will be considered in the context of any additional remedial teacher allocations which may be undertaken for the forthcoming school year.
