Vol. 489 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cross-Border Projects.

Michael Bell

Question:

31 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the progress, if any, made in the provision of a North-South gas interconnection; if EU funding is to be sought for this; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8371/98]

A joint North-South study into the feasibility of a natural gas interconnector between Dublin and Belfast has been carried out. The report of the study concluded that a natural gas interconnector is technically possible and represents the most cost-effective means of the potential solutions considered in relation to gas supply issues for both sides of the Border.

Because of the continuing high growth in gas demand I have launched a study of future gas needs to the year 2025 to ensure that any necessary infrastructural development is identified and put in place in good time. The findings of the North-South study are being examined as part of the gas demand study.

The question of seeking EU funding does not, therefore, arise at this stage.
