Written Answers. - Defence Forces Pensions.

Question:

78 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Defence the number of serving members in the Defence Forces, both officers and serving soldiers; the number of ex-employees in each category receiving pensions; and the number of serving staff and retired staff on disability pensions or compensated for a disability on a once off basis. [8483/98]

The strength of the Permanent Defence Force was 11,474 on 28 February 1998 comprising 1,436 officers and cadets, and 10,038 NCOs and Privates.

There are 1,085 former officers and 4,848 former NCOs and Privates of the PDF in receipt of service pensions while 122 former officers and 626 former NCOs and Privates are receiving disability pensions.

Since 1993, approximately 2,340 serving and former members of the Defence Forces, about 1,000 of whom were serving, have received compensation arising from personal injury claims. Details prior to 1993 are not readily available.
