Enda Kenny

Question:

361 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance if he has received a proposal in relation to a development of a millenium park at Murrisk, Westport, County Mayo, to complement the national park already located there; if his attention has been drawn to the suitability of the particular location as a millenium park; the consideration, if any, he has given to the proposal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8894/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 350, 352 and 361 together.

As I stated, in response to a similar question on 17 February 1998 the Office of Public Works co-funded the provision of the National Famine Memorial at Murrisk with the Taoiseach's Department. A proposal regarding a millenium park was prepared by Office of Public Works in the context of its involvement in the memorial project and with a view to demonstrating how such a memorial could be enhanced by placing it in a sensitive and appropriate setting. The provision of such assistance, by Office of Public Works, did not signify that it was in a position to contribute financially to the project should it proceed. The resources of the Department of the Taoiseach's Famine Commemoration Committee and those of Office of Public Works in relation to the Murrisk Memorial have been fully expended and it is not intended that further moneys will be allocated for a millenium park there.
