Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Industrial Disputes.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

383 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the difficulties being created by the industrial dispute involving community welfare officers in County Kildare; the steps, if any, taken to have the dispute settled having regard to the difficulties being created for those who need the services of the community welfare officers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9490/98]

The administration of the supplementary welfare allowance scheme in County Kildare is a matter primarily for the Eastern Health Board. I understand from the board that discussions are ongoing between the board and the community welfare officers in the Kildare area to resolve this dispute. The consultation process is being facilitated by an independent facilitator and I understand that both sides are meeting today on this matter.

In light of the ongoing discussions you will appreciate that it would be inappropriate for me to comment any further at this stage. I am, however, assured by the board that arrangements are in place to deal with urgent requests.
