Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Water Fluoridation.

John Gormley

Question:

461 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the widely publicised statement by the overwhelming majority of scientists issued through their trade union at the US Environmental Protection Agency that fluoridation of public water supplied is a menace to human health, that the US Environmental Protection Agency's previous efforts on fluoride are fraudulent and that fluoridation should be immediately stopped; and if he will make a statement on the scientific accuracy of their claims. [9370/98]

I am aware of a statement made by the National Federation of Federal Employees in the United States taking a position opposed to the fluoridation of drinking water.

I am not aware of any credible evidence giving substance to claims that fluoridation of drinking water at optimal levels poses any health risks. The Department of Health and Human Services in the United States has reviewed all the relevant scientific information including that put forward by anti-fluoridationists. This comprehensive review of the benefits and potential health risks of fluoride has concluded that the practice of fluoridating community water supplies is safe and effective.
