Vol. 489 No. 6

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 31 from Deputy Gormley. I call on the Deputy to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

In accordance with Standing Order 31, I request this House to state its view that matters of constitutional importance being decided by referendum should be decided on a stand alone single referendum basis, and that the issue of the future of relations between peoples on this island and the issue of the scope of future development of the European Union are each issues of immense importance for the future of this country and should be decided independently, being given proper consideration on different polling days.

Having fully considered the matter, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
