Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Liz McManus

Question:

591 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the time frame for the work, the system of control, the starting date and the expected cost in relation to the announcement that Bray is included as a location for the installation of a Garda CCTV system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8598/98]

The introduction of CCTV into an area is a joint venture and requires the involvement and support of the local community, the Garda authorities and my Department. An application was made by local interests for the introduction of CCTV in Bray and this was considered by the CCTV advisory group appointed by the Commissioner. Last month I confirmed with the Commissioner that Bray would be included in the priority listing for the installation of Garda CCTV systems. I understand that tender documents are being drawn up by the Garda authorities for issue through the official journal of the European Community for a CCTV system in the Bray area in conjunction with a number of other CCTV systems. A precise date for the commencement of the installation will be determined when the tendering stage has been completed.

The Deputy will appreciate that it is not possible to provide any details at this stage of the expected cost of the system as the tender process has not been completed. However, it has always been the policy of my Department to provide funding for Garda CCTV systems on a shared basis with local community/commercial interests and I can say that this policy will also be applied in relation to the Bray system.
