Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Court Sittings.

Pat Carey

Question:

592 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will agree to seek an increase in court time allocated to the backlog of eviction cases by opening the courts for longer periods in view of the very long time which it is taking to evict anti-social tenants from local authority areas, particularly in the Dublin Corporation area; if he will establish a new court to expedite these cases; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8674/98]

Róisín Shortall

Question:

632 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the severe difficulties being caused to communities trying to deal with anti-social behaviour as in the case of a community (details supplied) in view of the delays in securing eviction orders; if he will consider establishing a special housing court to deal with the considerable backlog of cases in the Dublin area; if it is possible to increase court time to expedite these cases; and the proposals, if any, he has to tackle this urgent problem. [9502/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 592 and 632 together.

The scheduling of cases in the Dublin Metropolitan District Court, is a matter for the President of the District Court and is one, in which I have no function. However, I am informed that at present applications for eviction orders and related matters are heard by the District Court in Dublin each Friday. I am further informed that there are no delays in the Dublin Metropolitan District Court in the processing of cases relating to the eviction of anti-social tenants in the Dublin Corporation area.
