Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Meetings with Elected Representatives.

John Gormley

Question:

627 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on whether it is a right of a constituent to meet his or her TD and local elected representative to lobby or canvas; his further views on whether exercising this right involves an expense for the deaf and hearing impaired, through acquiring and paying for an interpreter; and whether this cost should be recognised and met in the most appropriate way by the State. [9339/98]

It is the right of all constituents to meet their TDs and local elected representatives for the purpose of lobbying, canvassing etc. Whether the exercise of this right might involve an expense for a person with a disability, additional on the expense that might be incurred by that person if they did not possess such disability, would seem to depend on the particular circumstances of the individual concerned. How this might best be addressed will be considered as part of a much wider issue concerning the additional ongoing costs incurred by people with a disability in their day-to-day living.
