Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Refugee Status.

John Gormley

Question:

628 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the decision, if any, which has been made regarding the resident status of a person (details supplied). [9340/98]

It is not the practice to comment publicly on individual applications for refugee status having regard to the fact that applications by their nature are made in confidence with an expectation by the applicant that such confidence will be preserved.

However, I can confirm that the person in question has made an application for refugee status and that the application will be considered in accordance with the provisions of the Refugee Act, 1996, and the criteria set out in my Department's letter to the UNHCR of 10 December 1997 as amended on 13 March 1998. No decision has been taken on this individual application to date.
