Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Alan Shatter

Question:

665 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Education and Science the arrangements, if any, he has put in place for the construction of a post-primary school at Knocklyon, Dublin 16; the further steps, if any, he has determined are required to provide for the design of the school; when it is anticipated planning permission will be sought for the school; the number of children for which provision will be made by the school; and the proposed opening date for the school. [8581/98]

A definitive long-term enrolment figure for the new second level school at Knocklyon has not yet been determined. When the figure has been decided, a schedule of accommodation will be drawn up.

In the meantime, the technical staff of my Department are assessing the architectural plans and other technical documentation which were drawn up previously for the school. There will be quite extensive revisions required to these plans to take account of curricular changes, increases in the Department's area norms and other changes in the planning, building and fire safety regulations in the intervening years. It will also be necessary to incorporate into the plans any changes resulting from revisions to the schedule of accommodation.

It is not possible at present to say what the exact timetable for the various planning stages will be but every effort will be made to ensure that the new building will be available for first-year students in September 2000.
