Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Willie Penrose

Question:

675 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 559 of 30 September 1997, he will permit the tendering and contractual process to proceed as a matter of urgency in relation to the provision of extra classrooms, extension, toilets, refurbishment, safe parking and drive-in access at a school (details supplied) in County Westmeath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8591/98]

In September 1997 my Department's architectural staff commenced architectural planning for a one classroom extension plus various refurbishment works at the school to which the Deputy refers.

In view of the projected increase in enrolments at this school, the proposed building project is no longer considered adequate to resolve the long-term accommodation needs of this school.

A meeting on this matter was held within the past couple of weeks between the school management and officials of my Department. My Department will be in touch shortly with the school concerning the proposals discussed at the meeting and I will keep the Deputy informed of developments.
