Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

681 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that St. Michael's CBS primary school, Inchicore, Dublin 8, still has only outside toilets; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that it is the only school with outside toilets in the Dublin Central constituency; if he will provide the necessary funds to finance inside toilets in view of the concern of the principal that the students have to go outside to the toilet and are in danger from drug addicts who frequently scale over the school walls and locked gates; if so, when these funds will be made available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8639/98]

My Department has received an application from Saint Michael's Christian Brothers National School, Inchicore, Dublin 8, for grant assistance towards the cost of relocating the outside toilets to within the existing school building.

My Department's architectural service has been examining the case with a view to developing the most appropriate and cost effective solution. This examination has recently been completed and a report on the various options has been furnished to the primary building unit for consideration.

When a decision is taken in the matter the school manager will be informed of the outcome without delay and I will keep the Deputy informed of developments.
