Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

John Perry

Question:

703 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps, if any, he has taken to make the teachers in a college (details supplied) in County Sligo permanent, in view of the fact that some teachers are employed there for up to 12 years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8765/98]

My Department has been endeavouring for some time to secure a resolution to the staffing difficulties in the college in question. My Department intends to initiate discussions in the near future with the management and union sides in the college with a view to concluding a PCW agreement which will include conversion of relevant posts to permanent positions.

I met representatives of the joint union group from the college on 1 April 1998 and informed them of this development which, I hope, will enable the matter to be resolved. I have also informed the college authorities of the position.
