Question:

190 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources whether two employees of the Central Fisheries Board made written statements regarding irregularities in the recording of the number of salmon caught on the board's commercial fishery in Ballina, County Mayo, in 1997; if so, whether these allegations were fully investigated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8889/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 188, 189 and 190 together.

I can advise the Deputy that the Central Fisheries Board has been carrying out an internal inquiry into certain allegations of irregularity at the State owned Moy Fishery which is currently managed and staffed by the CFB. I understand that the board expects to conclude this internal inquiry shortly. I am not aware of any formal Garda involvement in the inquiry.

While the matter is primarily the responsibility of the Central Fisheries Board, I have requested the board to advise me of the outcome of its inquiry and, depending on the findings, any further action which the board might deem necessary to take. The Deputy will appreciate that I am not in a position to comment in detail on the matters being inquired into, or to pre-empt the outcome of that inquiry.
