Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

743 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received an application from a school (details supplied) in County Meath for funding for the provision of a new school; his Department's opinion and views on this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9157/98]

I understand that an application to establish a school, in the area referred to by the Deputy, is due in the planning section of my Department today. A notice of intention to establish such a school was received last February. The letter indicated that the school would commence operation in September 1998, but provided no further detail. The promoters of the school were advised of the conditions attaching to the grant of recognition to such schools and of the need to submit a formal application to my Department without delay, to allow for a full and detailed examination of the case. An application at this stage, to open a school for next September, is very late. However, it will receive urgent attention in my Department.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

747 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide funding for work at a school (details supplied) in County Monaghan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9161/98]

My Department provided grant aid for the provision of an extension at the school in question and the final account was approved recently. Any conditions or requirements laid down by the certificate of planning permission or the fire certificate must be indicated by the design team at stage 4 of the architectural design of the project and accounted for in the costing of the project as part of my Department's design team procedures. In this particular project the documentation did not indicate any requirement for the additional works for which payment is now being sought. In the circumstances, my Department is not in a position to approve this additional cost.
