Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

788 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the total number of places required at St. Mary's College, Naas, County Kildare; whether this requirement is likely to be met by the proposed extension under consideration in his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9454/98]

The enrolment at St. Mary's College, Naas, for the current school year is 800 pupils. When the extension is completed, the school will have 800 permanent pupil places. It would appear that, due to the wishes of the school management and because of site restrictions, it may not be possible to expand the accommodation beyond 800 pupil places. My Department is satisfied that St. Mary's College and the vocational school will, between them, have sufficient accommodation to cater for all girls seeking pupil places in the short-term. In view of the extensive housing developments in the Naas area, my Department is carrying out a review to determine future requirements.

Question:

791 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science whether matters have been finalised in respect of possession of a site for the girls second level school at Celbridge, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9457/98]

The legal arrangements for the formal acquisition of the site at Ballymakeely, Celbridge, County Kildare, for the proposed new girls' post primary school have not yet been completed. This matter will be finalised as soon as possible, however, I do not anticipate any impediment to the construction of the school in due course.

The design team for the project is currently preparing combined stages 4/5, detailed design bill of quantities, for submission to the Department's post-primary building unit. Construction will commence as soon as architectural planning and tendering have been completed.
