Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Remuneration and Conditions.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

237 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Defence if his Department made a submission to the Gleeson commission; if so, if that submission or any other communication between the Department and the commission made reference to the submission made by the Officers of the Defence Forces seeking a Defence Forces' compensation board; and the position adopted by the Department in regard to that submission. [8877/98]

Following its establishment on 27 July 1989, the Commission on Remuneration and Conditions of Service in the Defence Forces invited submissions from interested parties in relation to the matters covered by its terms of reference. The commission received 215 written submissions in total, including a submission from my Department. This submission was essentially a presentation of the factual position pertaining to the rates of pay and various allowances and an outline of other miscellaneous matters such as age of retirement, superannuation arrangements. My Department was not aware of the content of the submissions made by other groups, including the officers of the Defence Force, to the commission.
