Vol. 489 No. 7

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

150 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the EU fund which provided the funding in relation to the upgrading of the Maynooth railway line; and the conditions under which this funding was provided in relation to uses of the line. [9627/98]

In March 1996 a package of investment in DART and suburban rail services under the Operational Programme for Transport 1994-99 was approved. The package, which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, included the reconstruction of Drumcondra railway station on the Maynooth line which opened in early March 1998 and the provision of a new station at Kilcock on which work has commenced.

The Maynooth line is also benefiting from the EU assisted investment package in the Dublin-Sligo line which is being co-financed by the Cohesion Fund and includes a major upgrading of track and signalling.

Córas Iompair Éireann was required to submit its proposed implementation timetable and an indicative expenditure profile for the overall package of projects. However, no specific conditions as to the uses of the line were attached to the funding.
