Question:

167 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food further to Parliamentary Question No. 98 of 18 December 1997, the actual number of farmers that received one or more payments of the £962.5 million paid to farmers in 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9570/98]

My Department does not have the information in the format requested. The number of payments made under each individual scheme in 1997 is set out in the following table.

* A total of 34,314 payments were made under the REPS. At the beginning of January 1997 there were 22,946 participants in the scheme. A further 8,440 joined the scheme during the year bringing the total participation to 31,386 at the end of the year.
** A total of 75,561 payments were made under the ERS. In January 1997 there were 5,393 participants in the scheme. A further 1,719 joined the scheme duering the year bringing the total participation to 7,112 at the end of the year.
