Vol. 489 No. 7

Written Answers. - Communications Masts.

Liz McManus

Question:

202 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the serious concern expressed by local residents in Ardmore, County Waterford, regarding the proposed erection of a communications mast for Esat Digifone at the Garda station, particularly in view of its proximity to a housing estate and primary school; if, in view of the concern, the Garda will reconsider the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9643/98]

There is a contractual agreement with Esat Digifone allowing it to install mobile telephony equipment at specified Garda stations subject to certain conditions. These conditions include a requirement that Esat Digifone complies fully with planning requirements, health and safety legislation, the Radiological Protection Act and all relevant guidelines which may be set down from time to time by the International Radiation Protection Association. Should any doubt arise in this regard it would be a matter for the relevant planning authority to consider. In this regard, I understand the proposed development at Ardmore will require planning permission.
