Vol. 489 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Michael Ring

Question:

205 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if a refund of school transport costs could be provided to persons (details supplied) in County Mayo in view of the fact that they had to personally pay for the child's transport. [9633/98]

The pupil to whom the Deputy refers lives 1.6 miles from the nearest national school, and, therefore, does not qualify for free transport on distance grounds. Furthermore, the pupil is not attending the nearest school.

Under the school transport scheme, there is no provision for refunds of transport costs for pupils who are ineligible.

In the circumstances, I regret the family in question is not entitled to free transport, or to a refund toward the cost of transport as requested.
