Vol. 489 No. 7

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Promotions.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

33 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, the Defence Forces has to increase the number of officers from the ranks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9253/98]

There are a number of means by which non-commissioned personnel may advance to commissioned rank.

Non-commissioned personnel who attain particular specialist qualifications may be appointed to commissioned rank, to fill vacancies in areas in which they are qualified, provided that they satisfy an interview board as to their suitability. It is the policy that the filling of such vacancies by commissioning enlisted personnel be given first consideration.

The possibility of commissioning suitably qualified personnel in the information technology area of the Defence Forces and in the air traffic control area of the Air Corps is currently being examined.

Non-commissioned personnel may also be appointed to be officers on successful completion of a potential officers course. Serving members of the Defence Forces may also compete in the annual cadetship competitions provided that they meet the criteria with regard to age, educational and medical standards.
