Vol. 489 No. 7

Written Answers. - St. Bricin's Military Hospital.

Ivor Callely

Question:

94 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the consideration, if any, given to increase the activities and provision of services from St Bricin's Hospital, Dublin 7; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9255/98]

St. Bricin's Hospital currently provides inpatient accommodation for up to 64 inpatients, a full pharmacy service and a wide range of outpatient services for members of the Defence Forces. Outpatient services provided include general surgery, psychiatry, physiotherapy, radiology, pathology, dental services — including periodontal treatment. The hospital is neither equipped nor staffed to provide services other than those provided at present.

Any proposal that might lead to increased utilisation of the hospital's facilities without additional expenditure being incurred by my Department, would receive serious consideration. Indeed, discussions are currently taking place with a major Dublin hospital with a view to setting up a pilot inpatient scheme which could be of benefit to both hospitals.
