Vol. 490 No. 1

Written Answers - Beef Marketing.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

17 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food whether Irish beef is again back on sale in Britain and other major supermarket chains. [9395/98]

Irish beef is now being sold again by three of the major five UK multiple retailers, including Tesco. A very considerable effort has been made to ensure unrestricted access for Irish beef to the British market. I have raised the issue at the Council of Ministers, directly with my UK counterpart, and in direct meetings with individual multiple retailers. I am pleased that these efforts have borne fruit.
