Vol. 490 No. 1

Written Answers - Public Service Pensions.

Ivor Callely

Question:

60 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance if all public service pensioners have benefited from various restructuring deals in their pensions; the issues, if any, outstanding ; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9691/98]

As the Deputy is aware, my Department is directly responsible only for Civil Service pensioners. In the case of those pensioners, because of the complexities of the various restructuring deals, it is necessary to examine most pensioner files manually, in consultation with other Departments, in order to determine what increase is due. In many cases, manual examination of files is also necessary to determine which restructuring deal is applicable to the individual pensioner. The number of pensioner files involving manual examination is over 9,000. The work in my Department has been ongoing on the implementation of this decision since its announcement last November and the full amounts due have been paid in some cases. I would add that some pensioners are not yet in a position to benefit because restructuring deals have not yet been concluded for their serving counterparts. An advance payment was made to a substantial proportion of pensioners before Christmas.

As regards other areas of the public service, my Department issued instructions last November on the implementation of the Government decision along with a request to make the relevant payments as quickly as possible. I understand that the payment of arrears has been completed in many cases.
