Vol. 490 No. 2

Priority Questions. - Sale of State Assets.

Derek McDowell

Question:

13 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Finance the communication or contacts, if any, he has had with any third parties in relation to the potential sale or restructuring of State assets. [9521/98]

While various parties have expressed an interest in acquiring the State banks, it would not be in the commercial interest of the banks or of the interested parties to disclose the nature of these contacts at this time. However, I assure the Deputy that any disposal of all or part of the State's interest in the banks will be open, transparent and non-discriminatory. As regards other State assets, I have not had any direct contacts with third parties in this connection. From time to time, my Department receives routine representations from firms wishing to be considered as advisers should the Government decide to dispose of State assets.

I am grateful to the Minister for his clear response. Has he received communications from the Department of Public Enterprise or any State boards in relation to the potential restructuring of State assets and State companies?
