Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - Rural Environment Protection Scheme.

Michael Ring

Question:

138 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if the REP scheme will be continued beyond the five years originally planned; if so, if it will be extended for 15 years; and the effect it will have on those currently in the REP scheme. [9938/98]

Ulick Burke

Question:

152 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the information, if any, he has in relation to a new REP scheme in view of the fact that some participants are approaching their last year in the current scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10081/98]

The current REP scheme was initially approved for a five year period ending in 1999. An improved REPS package has been drawn up in conjunction with the EU Commission Services which will apply in natural heritage areas and commonages. The proposed new scheme, which has yet to be formally approved by the Commission, includes the operation of basic REPS and will operate for five year periods, renewable for up to 15 years. It is the intention, as set out in the programme for Government that the current REP scheme, outside NHA-commonage areas will be continued beyond 1999 for at least ten years. It will be open to existing participants to reapply on expiry of their current five year contracts.
