Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - Leinster House Building Project.

Enda Kenny

Question:

168 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance the proposals involved in the provision of Leinster House 2000; when he expects to be in a position to commence these works; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9992/98]

The Leinster House proposals involve the provision of approximately 11,000 sq. m. — gross — of new accommodation for use by the Houses of the Oireachtas on the site currently occupied by the National College of Art and Design. In broad terms, the new building will provide accommodation for 110 Members and their direct staff, committee rooms and associated procedural offices, party room and public and press areas.

As the Deputy may be aware, the Commissioners of Public Works are currently engaged in a planning process for the new development. This is due to conclude on 21 May next. Subject to planning approval, it is the intention to start work on site in July this year, ie: immediately after the Oireachtas rises for the summer recess. Construction completion is scheduled for July 2000. Commissioning will be completed before the commencement of the autumn sitting of the Oireachtas that year.
