Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - National Minimum Wage.

Nora Owen

Question:

278 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has assessed the implications for early school leavers of the introduction of a minimum wage at the rate recommended by the Minimum Wage Commission. [9766/98]

I am concerned that the introduction of a minimum wage at the rate recommended by the Minimum Wage Commission does not attract people out of school before the completion of the senior cycle and have requested that the implications of the report of the National Minimum Wage Commission are fully assessed. I have also arranged for representation from my Department on the interdepartmental group established to assist the Tánaiste in formulating proposals and a plan of action for Government. I support the Government's policy on addressing this important issue.
