Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - Teaching Posts.

Jim Higgins

Question:

286 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a second teacher to Deereens National School, Achill, County Mayo. [9899/98]

Derreens national school is currently one of 103 one teacher national schools in the country.

An Action Programme for the Millennium contains a commitment to give primary education a clear priority in allocating resources. In this context, the programme specifically states that one teacher schools with ten or more pupils will receive a second teacher.

In the context of considering staffing arrangements for primary schools for the 1998-99 school year, I am examining a range of options with a view to identifying the most appropriate way to fulfil the Governments's commitments to one teacher schools as outlined in An Action Programme for the Millennium.

Question:

314 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has considered the application from the primary schools of Attymass, Bonniconlon, Bofield and Carra, County Mayo, in relation to an application for a remedial teacher; his response in this regard; when the group can expect a teacher to be approved and appointed to this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10064/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 288, 291, 312, 313 and 314 together.

My capacity to allocate additional remedial and resource teacher posts in any given year is dependent on resource availability and the level of competing demand from other special needs areas. I have to determine priorities and allocate available resources to best effect. I am currently reviewing provision across the special needs area, including the remedial and resource area, to ensure that all available resources are deployed as effectively as possible. I can assure the Deputies that the needs of the schools to which they refer will be considered in the context of any additional remedial or resource teacher allocations which may be undertaken for the forthcoming school year.
