Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - One-Teacher Schools.

Enda Kenny

Question:

304 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that teachers in one-teacher schools are clearly working in breach of section 12 (1) of the Organisation of Working Time Act, 1997; the way in which he proposes to rectify the problem in view of the fact that no collective agreement exists to provide for an exemption in this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9989/98]

I can assure the Deputy that I am very conscious of the particular difficulties experienced by teachers in one-teacher schools.

An Action Programme for the Millenium contains a commitment to give a second teacher to one-teacher schools with ten or more pupils.

I am currently examining a range of options with a view to identifying the most appropriate way to fulfil this commitment. A range of issues affecting one teacher schools is being taken into account in this context.
